Myth: To lose weight, you should avoid carbohydrates and load up on proteins.

Fact: This may not be an effective way to lose weight over the long term. Pounds lost quickly on a low-carb diet tend to be mostly water. Such weight loss is usually temporary. And you may be missing out on key nutrients found in certain types of foods. This diet plan may also overwork your kidneys and can lead to:

  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Bad breath

In addition, this diet can lead to a buildup of a certain type of chemical called ketones in your blood. If you build up too many ketones, you go into a state of ketosis. Ketosis can cause kidney stones and a painful swelling of the joints.
